Nick and Marcus first met in 2003 and realised they were a great business fit. They’ve delivered fantastic results on a wide number of projects covering categories from dairy and ready meals to processed meats and soft drinks, and have experience supplying all retail channels.
Alfonso joined the Oakland Group in 2015 and now heads up the Spanish import and export division in Barcelona.
They are supported with a wealth of retail and supply chain experience from the Acorn and Oakland board members. Between them they have over 200 years experience in retail, manufacturing, agency development, importing, exporting, and supply chain management.
After starting out in sales aged 14, selling fruit and veg on his family’s market stall, Nick knew early on that he wanted to work in FMCG. Taking a role with Unigate at the beginning of his career he quickly climbed the ladder, gaining experience across multiple retailers, convenience sectors and wholesale channels and working for brands including Muller, Ferrero, Britvic, Onken and St. Ivel.
Nick has held director and managerial roles and has established a reputation for delivering excellent results in the UK and Europe.
Marcus first started out in sales and marketing aged 15, when he managed a back-to-school coupon promotion for Yazoo. He went on to join the family agency business in 2003 and, later, Ter Beke, a large Belgian meats and ready meals manufacturer.
Over his career, Marcus has managed and developed brands and private label ranges across dairy, ready meals, processed meats and soft drinks, and has built up a breadth of knowledge from stock control and forecasting to commercial, category management and marketing.
Marcus is a passionate leader and loves nothing more than to delight shoppers and consumers with new and exciting products.
Born in Barcelona and educated in France, Alfonso has spent all his professional life living and working across the European borders in France, Switzerland, the UK, and currently Barcelona, Spain.
He has developed his skills in sales and senior management in sectors such as direct marketing, banking, and logistics, and has built a track record of successful leadership and excellent results.
Alfonso has held senior management or director positions at companies including Consodata Iberia, MBNA and Linpack Allibert Iberia and his experience in startups on the Spanish market makes him a key asset in our European Business Development strategy.
As part of a successful agency, we created the Yazoo brand, entered the UK market, and built it to a retail value of £25m. We initially built the brand through the wholesale, cash and carry and convenience markets before the major multiples took notice. By spotting a gap in the market we were able to take a concept and transform it into what is now an award-winning, multi-million-pound brand.
While working with Muller we managed multiple retailer accounts worth £60m turnover and delivered 33% growth across yoghurts and desserts. This multi-functional role covered sales, marketing, category management, forecasting and replenishment and we utilised all assets to deliver on a volume and profit basis. During this time, the Muller senior accounts team was voted best in class by the UK Retailer Grocer Survey and achieved market-leading shares of 42%.
Working on the Rocher, Kinder, Nutella and Tic Tac brands, we concentrated on developing high impact, point of purchase displays and driving distribution across the major multiples, convenience, and wholesale channels. Quality was everything at Ferrero. The product was never promoted to risk de-valuing the brand and every aspect of the journey was aimed at delighting the consumer. Supported with below the line activity, this approach led to rapid growth for the Ferrero brands.
The pate category is dominated by private label, so to succeed we had to think like a brand but on a far smaller budget. By doing so, we grew Ter Beke’s market share to 52% and a turnover of £24m. In 2002 we were awarded category captaincy at Asda and after entering Aldi with a category-led approach in 2013, we quickly developed their business to a retail value of £6m and were made category advisors as a result.
We partnered with a Belgian ready meals company to create Hot Cuisine UK, managing their full retail solution including selling, marketing, forecasting and invoicing, and became the first company to launch sous-vide ready meals on the retail market. Sous-vide was a relatively new concept at the time and we gained listings in Asda for a four-strong range of Extra Special meals, growing the range to a retail value of 8.3m within the first three years.
Oakland International partnered with a leading convenience retailer to provide an innovative and environmentally friendly supply chain service. By introducing a bespoke case and pallet consolidation scheme, we were able to reduce the retailer’s yearly carbon footprint by 2,468 tonnes and save more than 5.5 million road miles per year. It also reduced wastage at depots by 16% and improved availability and the freshness of products in store. Our close working relationship allows both parties and their suppliers to benefit from an evolving programme of carbon reduction and environmental and renewable change to deliver significant benefits and savings for all.
The Oakland Group is recognised as an award-winning group of businesses that is inspiring Britain and the sector. It has been built on strong family values, acts with a social conscience and continually pushes the boundaries to offer great service, operational excellence, and added value for its clients.
